This book offers a history of Japanese television audiences and the popular media culture that television helped to spawn. In a comparatively short period, the television industry helped to reconstruct not only postwar Japanese popular culture, but also the Japanese social and political landscape. During the early years of television, Japanese of all backgrounds, from politicians to mothers, debated the effects on society. The public discourse surrounding the growth of television revealed its role in forming the identity of postwar Japanese during the era of high-speed growth (1955 - 1973) that saw Japan transformed into an economic power and one of the world`s top exporters of television programming.

The Residents - The Commercial Album (DVD)
When The Residents released THE COMMERCIAL ALBUM in 1980, their idea was to create a series of one-minute songs equal in length to an average television commercial. In addition to the songs, the band produced four one-minute videos that would later get heavy rotation during the birth of MTV. Released before the band ever toured, these videos gave the public their first visual images of The Residents. Twenty-five years after COMMERCIAL'S release, the Residents have produced 10 more one-minute shorts to accompany tracks from the album. Thirty prominent artists also contribute to this video collection, producing 40 short videos that go with the now legendary album's songs.
